I SHALL NOT FORGET THE DAY WHEN MY 4th GRADER-BI-RACIAL-ADOPTED DAUGHTER CAME HOME FROM HER FIRST DAY AT A NEW SCHOOL AND ASKED: “Mommy, what is a nigger?”

All the recent sad racial situations all over the country has brought back a memory of my childhood that I have never been able to forget. A 14 year old boy, whom I knew because he lived in the neighborhood committed suicide. Sad all by itself. Understanding the specific circumstances is what brought back his memory today. Juergen was a black young man! His mother was German, his father a black American soldier. His mother raised him as a single parent coping with all the discrimination that was part of being a single mother during those days- being a single mother to a black son was quite different! Juergen was a bright, sensitive and likable young man. Growing up in Germany during those years was difficult enough without having to deal with being discriminated from the Besatzung and the German people. We really have not come that much further along in our acceptance of differences.

Thank you, Lilo Dixon. ❤️
